Teaching creative arts, developing skills and hidden abilities among children of with special needs at Kitanga primary school through play centred learning, engaging and participatory approaches while working together and supporting each other.
In March 2022 we collaborated with Edirisa UK to bring creative learning opportunities to a village-based school, Kitanga primary school in Rukiga district of western Uganda region.
The creative workshops project was a one week long and intense series of workshops in Dance, beatboxing/vocal percussion, singing & poetry, creative movement, drama & theatre improvisation, fun games, illustration, drawing and graffiti art.
They were facilitated in way that placed learners at the centre, they contributed to what they wanted to come out of the session, collaborated with each other to prepare the wrap-up performance and taught each other to ensure that all they learned stayed within them and can build on it further after the program.
We also facilitated professional development sessions with the teachers to ensure that the approaches we used stayed and can be practiced and adapted to become part of learning and school culture. We explored areas such as perspectives, creative approaches, using small focus groups, games & other tools, making learners teachers and setting up an environment that is suitable for students to thrive.
